Common Questions

Is it air conditioned?

We have 7 air conditioners, multiple ceiling fans and also portable upright fans to help keep you at the perfect temperature. In our environmentally friendly age, most of our guests turn on their airconditioners and ceiling fans for only 10-15 minutes before retiring to bed for the evening. They then shut off the air conditioners and keep the fans on through the night. This saves on energy and it makes the room just the right temperature.

How reliable is the weather?

  1. The Puerto Escondido area is quite an anomally. It does NOT rain here from November until May. We typically experience 0% precipitation during these months so the reliability of sunny sky days in the winter is tremendous. In the hot summer months, the locals and visitors welcome the nice warm rains that cool the temperature down and create our fantastic vegetation that we get to enjoy for the rest of the year.
  2. It is very rare to find an oceanfront destination that is NOT windy. Puerto is also special in this way because we leave our umbrellas out and OPEN year round. Meaning the wind does not blow them away. The umbrellas serve as shade from the sun for those that prefer to stay a bit cooler.
  3. It is 80-85 degrees every day in the winter and 85-90 in the summer.

Is it safe in the area from crime?

Yes it is safe. Once you come here you will realize that the locals are very friendly and trustworthy. There is very little crime in this part of Mexico. What little crime Puerto Escondido experiences, we are insulated from as we’re located 9 miles from town. For your piece of mind and protection we also have our staff sleep on site to keep a watch out for your safety.

Close but private from our friends? Is it intimate but not crowed for our entire group?

With 15,000 sq. ft. of living space you might not see your friends all week!  There is ample space at Casa Rubia for everyone in your party to socialize and enjoy some quiet solitude as well. Our beach is particularly peaceful; you could stroll along the beach for miles and may not pass a single person!

Is this a great property to stay for a larger family or group?

  1. We have a dining room that seats 26 people. Our main Onix table seats 16. This table illuminates with lights inside of it. It was hand made for this property at a cost of $25,000 USD. Our full time on-site chef specializes in traditional Oaxacan food and is available to assist you in the planning of your special menu and meals throughout your stay.
  2. With our sunny warm weather, flowers are in abundance in the area and right here at Casa Rubia. You’ll have a floral arrangement fitting for your special occasion.
  3. There are 6 separate rooms for guests, this creates an intimate feel with your own private resort, pool, meals and beach. Plus you are spread out enough that you can escape and find solitude as well. You won’t be tripping over each other in Csa Rubia’s 3000 sq ft living and dining room.
  4. With your own private beach, you’ll feel the connection with mother nature and with one another.

Family Friendly?

Absolutely yes! Casa Rubia provides an environment that is fun, engaging and safe for families with small children. Toys, games and kids videos are freely available for our guests to use, any of the staff members can supply these upon request

Safe water to drink?

Casa Rubia has an ultraviolet light water filtration system. As an extra precaution for our guests all water, and water-based drinks, from our kitchen are served from purified bottled water.

Flights & Airports?

  1. The best 2 airports to fly into are Puerto Escondido Airport - PXM (20 km from Casa Rubia) or Huatulco International Airport - HUX (100 km from Casa Rubia). All flights to Puerto Escondido Airport are routed through Mexico City or Oaxaca City, Mexico. Huatulco has flights from:

    Houston (Continental),
    Chicago (Pace & USA3000),
    Milwaukee (Allegiant),
Calgary & Edmonton (Sky Service and Sunwing),
    Vancouver (Sky Service and Sunwing),
Toronto (Air Canada, Sky Service and Sunwing),
    Winnipeg (Sky Service)
    Mexico City (Mexicana Click)
  1. Some of our clients also fly their own private jets directly into Puerto Escondido Airport. The runway is 8858ft (2700m) long and can easily land 737’s.

Can we swim right in front of Casa Rubia?

Yes you can. The water is beautiful and warm but the ocean has great energy here and one must be very careful when swimming.  Check with our staff members before swimming, they will tell you if there are active currents to be aware of.   For precaution we recommend using a floatation device such as a boogie board or life jacket for children or anyone that is not a strong swimmer.

Can we surf right in front of Casa Rubia?

Yes you can.  On some days the waves in front of the house are sufficiently to surf, however most often surfers will drive into Puerto Escondido to surf the waves at Zicatela Beach.

Do we need to worry about hurricanes?

Puerto Escondido is in a low hurricane risk zone. Cancun historically gets an average of one direct hurricane hit every 3 years, Puerto Escondido averages one every 40 years.

Why is it named “Casa Rubia”? What does that mean?

When we rented this "slice of paradise" property we knew we needed to buy it and share it’s uniqueness with others too.   We asked some locals what we should name the house as it used to be called “La Morena” which means “Dark skinned woman”. This wasn’t exactly a fit for us because our family are all blond and light skinned so we knew we needed to change the name. Locals said that we should call it “Casa Rubia”, casa is “Home” and “Rubia” means blond, hence the name of this special place. We feel the name has a nice ring to it.

Okay it seems too good to be true. What are the downsides of the area and of Casa Rubia?

  1. There are not as many flights here as there are to populated tourist destinations. That is why it’s quieter here. If there were that many flights then it would already be discovered and would no longer be the secret that it is now.
  2. Casa Rubia is 10 miles from town so you won’t be living right in the heart of town. You’ll be outside of town on the beach with the surf and the stars.
  3. If you want to do a ton of night clubbing then Puerto Escondido probably isn’t your best vacation destination. It has some hopping bars on the youthful surf beach of Zicatella but nightclubs are not a key driver for the area.
  4. This is not a shopping meca. If you are looking for Oscar de la Rente, Outlet malls, Walmart or Big Macs, you won’t find them here. This area is a genuine Mexican tourist town that has typically catered to Mexican tourists even more than foreign tourists. It does not have any big box stores or chain stores. "It's such a nice feeling." You can feel it in it’s soul.
  5. Along those lines, Puerto is not a spit shiny American tourist town. There are people that live in small houses with dirt floors and in town there are street curbs that are chipped. Many locals live a very simple life here. They are poor compared to many places in the US and Canda and Europe. The good news is that people DO NOT go hungry here. Food is so plentiful that many locals say “To starve in Puerto you need to be too lazy to pick bananas & too lazy to fish.” The bottom line is that this is a thriving town with a great feel and the locals and tourists are happy here.
  6. Not everyone in town speaks English. Many do speak English but not everyone. If this frustrates you then you might not want to come here. It is a great place to practice your Spanish as the locals love it when you try.
  7. Our staff is local to the area and they speak Spanish, we have one staff member that speaks English.
  8. There are little geckos on our property that we love, but for some people that might not be something you are used to. They are about 2 or 3 inches long and pose absolutely no threat to you but we thought we should give you a heads up.
  9. Some people prefer to cook on their vacations. You can do that at Casa Rubia if you wish but please know that our kitchen and our staff are set up to prepare each meal for you. You can choose your menu for the week and they will shop for you, and prepare it for you for each meal. If you wish to also have some of your meals in town then feel free to do that.
  10. Sorry but there are no time-share sales people here. If you really want to be pestered and sit through a 6-hour timeshare presentation for a coupon then it won’t be here. Phew!
  11. Some people love to haggle with vendors. Since Puerto caters to many Mexican tourists it has been established that there is no “Tourist price” here. There is the locals price and the locals price. Generally you don’t haggle here unless you’re buying 5 of something. The price is usually the price. Many guests prefer this and find many gifts at the market and in the local shops very affordable.
